It is kind of sad to see some of these adults stooping to such low levels by calling others names. Everyone knows there are several reasons for calling others names: low self-esteem (including the fear of being different and of not being accepted), general feelings of frustration, the perceived need to feel superior. I wonder which of the reasons for calling people "retards" Beth falls into. Whichever group it is, is nothing to feel proud about. Personally, I think she may fall into all three groups.

A former roomie, LE 58 (Tara), had a special needs daughter, and personally knew Beth quite well. If Tara had ever seen Beth write that, she would've had a "come to Jesus" session with Beth at the next AOL function.

Also, I believe that even in normal society, the word has been so poisoned that it's virtually unusable other than as an ugly insult. More importantly, its use in our chat room has been so corrupted that, IMHO, it *only* has its ugliest meaning. Beth asked me to retract my earlier opinion. But I still consider the use of the word--standing alone--as an insult in our room as thoroughly disgusting, so I won't retract my earlier view.
Lastly, opinions vary widely on exactly who would be on the list of those who meet her criteria for legitimate usage of the word. Personally, I'd nominate someone who spends numerous hours every day verbally assaulting people, especially one for whom Beth stated it's done only to "irritate" others.
